The Environment

Riverway and the EnvironmentRiverway stands out in that its identity and form is entirely driven by environmental design rather than just incorporating it.

Riverway is unique in Australia in that its holdings and landscape are so entwined that their perception is completely integrated. The main focus of Pioneer Park is the Riverway Arts Centre which is an integrated built/landscape form that interlocks with a large swimming lagoon. The interlocking is designed to foster the mutual reinforcement of cultural and recreational life in Thuringowa.

The Arts Centre building is designed to be roofed about 50 per cent by landscape, this feature being reinforced by landscape berms which blur the definition of the built and the landscape edge. Consistently, the Riverway Stadium utilises earth berms to surround the oval, the stadium being seen as a continuum of the berms, with its roof delicately hovering above.

The remaining landscape precincts are also formed by serpentine sweeps of landscaped berms which undulate across the parkland to complete the ‘environmental art’ composition.
