Riverway and Sustainablity

Lush river sceneryEnvironmentally Sustainable Development (ESD) Performance Guidelines

Riverway is unique in Australia in integrating measurable performance standards with artistic expression that places these standards on display. As an integral component of the Riverway planning, a Sustainable Development Policy has been developed. This policy forms the basis for public and private development within Riverway. The sustainable development policy is based upon seven principles of environmental sustainability.

The ESD Guidelines apply equally to all components of Riverway, creating the first urban waterfront precinct in Australia where all buildings and precincts are subject to ESD rating schemes. Riverway comprises public infrastructure (Riverway Arts Centre, Riverway Sports Stadium) and parklands – and private sector (Riverway Village and Riverway Residential Precincts) elements. All of these elements are designed to meet consistent levels of environmental sustainability, at a minimum of 4.5 star rating.

The implementation strategies that form part of the Sustainable Development Policy have been constantly monitored at all stages of the process to ensure that the set performance is met. The design and environmental guidelines for the residential and commercial components of Riverway were included in the Expression of Interest process for developers of these sites. These guidelines have been included as part of the development agreement between Council and the developers to ensure that the objectives will be met. Achievements in these areas will also be constantly monitored.
