Upper Ross Community Hub
The next stage of the Riverway Project focuses on the area comprising Apex Park and the Upper Ross shopping centre area (the Riverway Upper Ross Community Hub). The Thuringowa City Council has recently completed a Masterplan for this next Riverway node.
The master sets the overall strategic direction for the area that has both community and Council support. By working with the community, we want to create a safe, accessible and vibrant community hub in the Upper Ross and, by linking with Riverway, we will develop a positive identity for the area.
The Upper Ross has benefited from the State Government's Community Renewal project in many years. The Council will build upon this work and provide recreation and community facilities for residents of the area.
Our vision for Riverway had always been to extend the project along the entire 11km of the river from Black Weir to the Dam and the development of a Masterplan for the Upper Ross community hub area is an important step to make this happen.
Urbis JHD was commissioned to prepare the Masterplan for the precinct. Other major projects Urbis JHD have undertaken include the Brisbane Airport Masterplanning and the Goodna Town Centre Masterplan.
The master plan will provide a blueprint for Council to work with the community and landholders to manage development, beautify the area and provide valuable community facilities.
What's Happened So Far?
The background research for the Masterplan has now been completed. The research report provides a comprehensive review of the physical, social, economic and infrastructure issues.
A series of research studies have been conducted to identify key issues and opportunities for the future. They included:
- urban design analysis
- heritage and cultural assessment
- traffic and infrastructure analysis
- economic analysis
- environmental studies
- planning policy considerations.
Outcomes of the studies were discussed in consultations with local services, residents, community groups, business and government representatives, including:
- Interviews with Council staff, key local stakeholders (such as community groups, business owners, land owners and local facilities operators) and government representatives
- Workshop with local service providers
- Workshop with key local stakeholders
People identified a range of ideas and suggestions for the future. On that basis, the team have developed three possible options for people to consider.
These three options were then presented to local residents and businesses as well as other community stakeholders for review. A final version of the Masterplan incorporating feedback from this process was then developed. The Masterplan was presented to Council in September 2007 and adopted as the guiding vision for the future development of the Upper Ross Community Hub area.
